GiantLand Publishing House

Mission

*   to provide opportunities for student writing

*   to author and publish for a wider audience

*   improve writing skills

The publishing center was created in 1995 to provide all students an audience for their writing.  Grants, community support and fund raising initially helped renovate a room to serve as the center, purchased a laminator and trained volunteers to assist students with the writing/publishing process.

The Lookingglass Site Council maintains as part of the School Improvement plan a writing goal to encourage 100 percent of the students to publish at least one piece during the school year.  A published piece may be part of a class project, an independent project or the school newspaper.

An annual publishing celebration called the Book and Breakfast provides parents and the community an opportunity to read published work, meet the authors and celebrate their accomplishments.

A Young Author of the Year award was established in 2006.  Students’ work is submitted by teachers and students for the award.  A committee of three teachers read and scored the pieces by the Oregon state scoring guide.

 The Young Author of the Year  receives a trophy and ribbon medallion.  Each Honorable Mention receives a ribbon medallion.  All young authors receive ribbons and certificates.
